Sargent Horrex was born in Lakenheath [ Mildenhall Q4-1891 4a:754], second son of Johna nd Betsy HORREX (née RUTTERFORD).

1901 census...Aged 9, he was living at Back Street,Lakenheath with his father- John HORREX [44] horsekeeper on farm; mother Betsy [44]; sisters Hannah [18] domestic servant, Violet [13] domestic servant, Amelia [10] and Maud [1 month]; brothers John [17] farm labourer and Frank [4]. All the family were born in Lakenheath

1911 census...Aged 18, a farm labourer, he was living at Back Street, Lakenheath with his parents, brother Frank and sister Maud. One sibling had died

The pension card has his mother at The Chequers Inn, Lakenheath


Enlisted in Bury St Edmunds
At the end of July 1916 the 1st Bedfords were at Pommiers Redoubt. Regimental reports give it as a quiet day, operations at 6 pm. They were ordered forward to Longueval to reinforce the 2nd Kings Own Scottish Borders who were holding the line with the 1st Royal West Kents in support. They reached Longueval at 7:45 pm and relieved the 1st.RW Kents. It then goes on to say that, between the 30th and 31st July, the battalion lost 22 NCOs and OR killed and over 200 wounded. CWGC show 3 killed on 30th and 19 on 31st, only one with a known grave.

The Bury Free Press of 19th August 1916 reported :-
LAKENHEATH SOLDIER'S NOBLE DEATH

Mr. and Mrs. John Horrex, of the Chequers Inn, Lakenheath, on Saturday, received a letter containing the sad news of the death of their second son, Prvt Sargent Horrex, Suffolk Regiment. The news was conveyed in a letter written by Prvt.R.E.Lord, who says :"He was killed while helping a wounded comrade and died instantly, suffering no pain". The young soldier was greatly respected, and the parents have lost a good son. Deep sympathy is felt for them in their sorrow.
